Today, Thursday, the United States of America announced the inclusion of the “Houthis”, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and other countries and groups on the list of new sanctions.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the countries of Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were included in the sanctions list because of their participation in or condoned “systematic, continuing and massive violations of religious freedom.”

Blinken included the Houthis, al-Shabab, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, and ISIS as well as ISIS in the Greater Sahara, ISIS in West Africa, the Nasr al-Islam group and the Taliban in the list of Entities of Particular Concern.

It also placed Algeria, Comoros, Cuba and Nicaragua on a special watch list of governments that have engaged in or condoned “grave violations of religious freedom.”

Blinken said the United States will continue to pressure all governments to address shortcomings in their laws and practices as well as promote accountability for those responsible.

Each year it is the responsibility of the US Secretary of State to determine which governments and non-state actors are eligible for sanctions under the International Religious Freedom Act for violations of religious freedom.
