An explicit American threat regarding Yemen… and a decisive message to the Houthis about the kidnapping of the American embassy employees in Sana’a

The United States has vowed to target anyone who contributes to fueling the conflict in Yemen, calling for the release of its employees kidnapped by the Houthi militia.

“We stand by the Yemeni people and will relentlessly target those who are fueling conflict and using the humanitarian crisis to enrich themselves,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken tweeted.

Blinken pointed out that the US Treasury added “Saleh Misfir al-Shaer”, the Houthi leader (head of the Houthis’ logistic support authority) to the sanctions list after a similar addition by the UN Security Council.

The US official denounced the Houthi militia’s seizure of the US embassy building in Sanaa, saying: I condemn the Houthis’ detention of our employees and the breach of the compound used by our embassy in Sanaa before suspending our operations in 2015.

He added, “The Houthis must release our employees immediately and unharmed and evacuate the compound immediately.”

A few days ago, the Houthi militia stormed the headquarters of the US embassy in Sanaa, and arrested a number of its employees, in a new escalatory step that will change Washington’s policy on Yemen.
