“Betrayal of Islam” Al-Azhar Al-Sharif comments on the bombing of a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan

Al-Azhar Al-Sharif condemned the suicide bombing of the Shiite “Bibi Fatima” mosque in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, stressing that “spreading sectarian division among Muslims is a betrayal of the teachings of the Islamic religion.”

In a statement, Al-Azhar expressed its “strong condemnation of the treacherous terrorist bombings, which targeted safe worshipers in a house of God’s houses in the city of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, killing dozens of innocent people and wounding others.”

Al-Azhar affirmed that “playing the strings of the differences of Islamic sects, and exploiting it to shed blood and intimidate the innocent – is a betrayal of the teachings of Islam, which called for the adoption of wisdom, exhortation and arguing with goodness in calling to God, stressing that those who kill worshipers in God’s homes and mosques have sold their religion for a cheap price in world, and they will receive their fullest punishment in the Hereafter.”

Al-Azhar stressed that “the pioneers of sedition in the fields of politics exploit the differences between schools of Islamic thought to sow discord and strife among Muslims, and they forget that these Islamic sects have lived side by side under Islam for more than 14 centuries.”

Al-Azhar hoped that “those who have strayed from the path should return today, before tomorrow, to open channels of dialogue, and to the brotherhood affirmed in the Holy Qur’an in the Almighty’s saying: {The believers are but brothers}, and to avoid entering into bloodshed and tampering with the sanctities and prohibitions of God.”

The statement concluded by saying that Al-Azhar Al-Sharif extends its “sincere condolences to the Afghan people for the victims of these terrorist bombings, praying to the Almighty God – to have mercy on the victims, and to grant their families patience and solace, {we belong to God and to Him we shall return}”.
