A recent Moroccan study revealed that 80% of Moroccans consider “virginity” a sign of chastity, religiosity and good upbringing, noting that 76.3% of the respondents confirmed that pre-marital relations are widespread in Moroccan society; According to the “Erm News” website.
The study conducted by the Manasat Foundation for Research and Social Studies, entitled: “Individual Freedoms in Morocco… Representations and Practices,” indicated that about 50% of the sample members considered cohabitation before marriage for boys as well as girls, as a matter of personal freedom, while the rest of the percentages were distributed among the attributes of those Relationships with moral corruption, deviation from religious teachings, and poor upbringing.
According to the same source, 76.3% of the study participants considered that “intimate relationships before marriage have become widespread in Moroccan society; As 60% of them stated that they personally knew a boy or girl, and that he or she had intimate practices.”
The study included samples in which 1,312 participants participated in all regions of the Kingdom of Morocco in a balanced manner with ratios between males and females.
The study dealt with the reality of individual freedoms in Morocco and included three main axes: the representation of the body and the extent of agreement with its individual ownership and the freedom to act according to individual will, whether in absolute or through daily practices related to clothing, and wearing the veil.
As for the second axis, it touches on the nature of the relationship with religion and the freedom of belief, and to what degree religious difference can be accepted, whether in the relationship with the other, near or far. While the third axis was devoted to sexuality, whether in terms of the sample’s representation of it or through the attitude towards the practices of others.
The results of the field research on the representation of the body confirmed different perceptions, as about a third of the research community (32.9%) represented a part of them, a number exceeded by more than half of the sample participating in the research with the conviction that the body is everything (52.6%), while (52.6%) matched 8.8%) of the research community between it and the concept of identity.
As for the rest, their opinions were divided between looking at the body as a means of action (2%), or as a tool for expression (2.1%), which are views that reduce a primary natural view of the capabilities and appearance of the human body.
In another context, 60% of the respondents refused to declare their homosexual tendencies in the public sphere, while 30% stated that they had direct personal knowledge of a person with homosexual tendencies, meaning that despite the negative representation and attitude towards the issue of homosexuality, there is a relative behavioral tolerance in everyday social relationships.
With regard to wearing the veil, 50% said that they see the way women dress as a matter of personal freedom; Nevertheless, 61.2% of the respondents expressed their support for the issue of covering the female body by wearing the veil. The percentage increases among females to reach 65.3%, compared to 57.1%.
The results of the same study indicated that about 50% of the respondents considered the way women dress as a matter of personal freedom, in a society often described as conservative, religious and traditional.
She pointed out that this positive approach should be taken for the majority of situations, with great caution, “as some of these situations may express a kind of interest rather than an expression of positive conviction in the issue of the freedom of the female body in the public space.”
According to the study, considering these women to be free-spirited in the street, educated, open and enlightened, the total percentages did not exceed 15.8% for males and 10.3% for females.
On the other hand, 31.3% of the sample members considered these women to be free-spirited in the street, disrespectful, perverted, cheap, and badly bred, and even 0.6% of them considered them to be infidels, according to the study.
