Today, Thursday, the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia received special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
“We are grateful to the committee for taking such a positive decision,” the head of the complex, Mufti Albert Karganov, told Sputnik.
He added: “Another non-governmental organization in Russia, represented by the Spiritual Congregation of Muslims of Russia, has received such a high position, which gives us the opportunity to participate in different types of meetings, to give an opinion on what matters to people today on several issues and from all countries.”
The website of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia indicates that the decision was made on the recommendation of the UN Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations dated July 21, 2021.
The Mufti indicated that at the level of the United Nations, the issue of providing medicines to orphaned patients from countries that do not have sufficient funds for this will be raised.
Consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, according to information on the UN website, provides the opportunity for NGOs to interact with the many UN bodies and sub-structures that deal with human rights issues and special groups.
As a reminder, the Economic and Social Council is the main body responsible for coordinating the economic and social activities of the United Nations and organizations within its system.
