In one of the unforgettable situations, in Sana’a at the end of 2014, the days of the government of national competencies, one of Abdul-Malik al-Houthi’s brothers came by chance, and we were discussing how the armed group could leave the government institutions that controlled it and obstructed its work. In the course of a long conversation about Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi’s leadership of the movement, who is the youngest, I asked his brother, who was at least a decade older than Abdul-Malik, why shouldn’t he or one of the older brothers or another person be the leader of the movement? I will not forget how the man and those with him were dumbfounded, and he repeated his disapproving sentence:
Fear God, professor. Fear God, professor! This is God’s choice!
This is the vision of Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi’s position among his group, and even what they see as the man in this universe! He is Mustafa from the Creator, Glory be to Him. In 2014, one of the authors of the official records was confused about a discussion session by the government and the other by the Houthi group, as he mentioned the name of Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and wanted a description of his party position within the group. The other question is, okay, the leader of the movement, and they responded with the same anger again, or that? And the question really opened its windows, what is the name of the man within the movement? And most importantly, what is the hierarchy of this movement? How are its leaders selected? What is its organizational structure?
If it is a political party and in a country like Yemen where the parties are more than worries about the heart, then it must have literature, open membership, hierarchical leadership, a position on current issues and a perception of the desired state shape! Not to mention general conferences and elections. There are no answers to such questions, and the observer cannot know the details of a security organization operating with a political front. None of its supporters dared discuss the movement’s structure and method of formation, as Hezbollah was a closed security institution with a limited political facade. All these questions remained pending and are still up to this moment, but the thing that shocked me was what I heard from the discussion, as I was in a state of astonishment at the time, and before things were revealed day after day, and I was coming at that time from a field governed by the rules of international law, that my Houthi representatives insistently wanted him to write the word (Al-Sayed). In front of the name of Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi alone, it is significant in Yemen that reinforces the division of society and wants to subject it to a racist view and awakens a memory of the bitter conflict that Yemen has experienced and is now returning to, unfortunately, while representatives of the official authorities see writing the word of the brother before any name whatsoever, including the President of the Republic, and only The right-wing law that was applied from the seventies to end any class or racial discrimination. As it is written officially in Yemen within the official correspondences of presidents, ministers and others, a unified term is the brother, (and this has nothing to do with the Brotherhood organization, by the way), rather it is a unification of the term that ends the sensitivity of titles in Yemen and was officially approved since the mid-seventies. But this is not acceptable to the representatives of the Houthi movement, as the word (the master) is the origin of recognition, the first steps of faith, and the last issue of struggle.
And so that the meeting would not break up, and as the Yemenis usually do in compromise, the solution was found on that day in writing the report that each party writes its copy and puts the appropriate term, where the scribe of the Houthi report says to its owner (Syed) and the clerk of the government report says to him (the brother) and every clerk returns to his leadership In his copy, and during a passing discussion, which made the matter shocking, when the question was repeated to the Houthi representatives about the man’s position, and what does he represent organizationally? The Houthi representative said about his master’s position that he is not a general secretary or leader of a movement, but rather (the master of the Arabian Peninsula and the leader of the Qur’anic march)! When we referred to the speaker, he did not enter the Arabian Peninsula with this matter while we were talking about his position in a party organization inside Yemen. The response was full of scorn, repeating the saying, “Yemen is this.” The leader is the leader of the entire universe. On that day, I remember that I was with a colleague of the former minister who was affiliated with the Houthi movement. I said that there is no need for us to complete any minutes or write minutes, and when he asked why? I simply said: Whoever was a leader in the procession of the Qur’an and was chosen by God, how would he comply with a record written by human beings? And that it is difficult for people to convince people of the language of the people of the earth when they see themselves from the people of heaven!.
This is the dilemma of the Houthis that Yemenis suffer from and cannot explain to the modern world, so how can you say to the world around you that is governed by the rules of humanitarian law, and looks forward to an open planet of technology, communication, equality and openness to all cultural and social diversity, that we are in front of a few who see that human rule has come A house for it from heaven, and the nation’s salvation is by returning to vendettas that are a thousand and five hundred years old, and we do not know what our relationship with them is. How do you explain to the world an unimaginable tragedy?
